The highest force or stress that a material can withstand before irreversibly deforming is known as its elastic limit. As long as the force remains within the elastic limit, a material, such as a rubber band or metal wire, will return to its original shape when stretched or compressed. The material will not regain its previous shape and will be irreversibly altered if the force is applied above this threshold. The elastic limit, to put it simply, is the line that separates transitory distortion from permanent deformation.
