Saturated Hydrocarbon Unsaturated Hydrocarbon
Hydrocarbons that contain only single bonds between carbon atoms. Hydrocarbons that contain at least one double or triple bond between carbon atoms.
Methane (CH₄), Ethane (C₂H₆), Propane (C₃H₈). Ethene (C₂H₄), Ethyne (C₂H₂), Butene (C₄H₈).
It is Less reactive. It is More reactive due to multiple bonds.
Only single bonds (C–C). Double or triple bonds (C=C or C≡C).
Straight or branched chains. May contain straight chains or rings.
Alkanes: CnH2n+2C_nH_{2n+2} Alkenes: CnH2nC_nH_{2n} Alkynes: CnH2n2C_nH_{2n-2}
