SMPS is used for high frequency switching and a transformer to regulate voltage while linear power supply regulate a drop excess voltage as heat . similarly SMPS is light weight due to it has a small transformer while linear power supply is heavy due to it has a big transformer .And SMPS is cheaper for high application while linear power supply is expensive .
